Movie Trailer: Isn’t it Romantic

It may be a little early to start thinking about Valentine’s Day, but… nah, it’s never too early to think about Valentine’s Day!

For those who haven’t been lucky enough to stumble across it yet (because it only came out a couple days ago. Lucky us!), the movie trailer for the upcoming February 2019 Rebel Wilson film Isn’t it Romantic is a fun send-up of Hollywood romantic comedies. If the film is half as zippy and smart, we’re in for a treat. She co-stars with Liam Hemsworth and Adam Devine.

In the trailer, Rebel Wilson’s Natalie is disillusioned about rom-coms, but after an accident she discovers herself trapped in one–a PG-13 one, at that. The colors are bright and cheerful, and birds fly in heart-formation.

2003’s Down with Love, a movie where Renee Zellweger and Ewan McGregor pay tribute to Doris Day and Rock Hudson style sex comedies, proved what a fine line Isn’t it Romantic will need to walk. It is difficult to mock romance, and be romantic at the same time. Parts of Down with Love were clever, enjoyable eye candy. Other parts were uncomfortable and tried too hard.

I’m putting Isn’t it Romantic on my calendar for Valentine’s Day. Of course, I also saw Deadpool for Valentine’s Day in 2016, and not because I was taken in by this trailer. Unnecessary Spoiler: Deadpool is NOT a rom-com–or at least, it is a whole lotta something else, too, that overrides the rom-com.
