BRINGING YOU THE BEST IN ROMANCE FICTION
A friend and I met up for a walk, just to get some exercise, soak up some rare sun, and let my dog sniff new smells. My dog reminded her of a true story she’d just heard from a friend.
A man got burned out on dating. His last relationship hadn’t ended well. He decided to take a year off. Instead of meeting women, he focused on his job, which mostly involved working at a construction site.
The following year, when he was ready, he signed up on an online dating site. He met a lovely woman, and they hit it off very quickly. It was only when he met her dog that he recognized her. The previous year he’d seen her jog by his work site every morning, for weeks, with her dog on a leash.
As with any tale, there are many morals you can take from my friend’s story. Perhaps they were meant-to-be, and his waiting a year merely put off the meeting they would have (and we all believe in meant-to-be around here, right?). On the other hand, it might show that opportunities abound, if we’re ready for them. Since I like animals, I thought it was nice that he noticed the dog more than the girl who regularly ran by.
However you take the story, though, it’s nice to think of two people moving in the same circles and finally finding each other. I often wonder how many encounters escape our notice. Without the dog, they might never have realized how frequently their lives brushed past each other.
Happy coincidences are often the crux of a good romance, but authors try not to stretch credibility to the breaking point. I appreciate all of you, out there, having your own true encounters and adding to the pool of what is possible.
Remember, every couple that ever existed has a story about how they first met.
